We continue on, covering a distance of approximately 3 km, until we reach Bibre, a yak herdsman's abode situated at an altitude of 4570m. Directly ahead, towering over a terminal moraine wall, is the imposing Island Peak (Imja Tse, 6189m), one of the most popular trekking peaks. The pyramid-shaped Imja Tse is a sight to behold with its steep rock and icy south face. As we make our way, we encounter icy streams intersecting the trail. After roughly 30 minutes of walking from Bibre, we finally arrive at Chhukung. Following lunch, we may choose to hike to the rocky knoll of Chhukung Ri, which boasts an elevation of 5546m and provides breathtaking views of Lhotse, Island Peak, Ama Dablam, Makalu, Baruntse, and many others.

The view from Chhukung and further up the valley on the moraines towards Island Peak (6189 m) is tremendous. We grasp this opportunity to climb the Chhukung Ri or climb to the base camp of Island Peak. The great south face of Lhotse towers above to the north and the immense fluted ice walls that flank it dominate the horizon to the south. To the southwest, the eastern face of Ama Dablam provides an unusual view of this picturesque peak.

At the crack of dawn, we set off from Chhukung with the daunting task of conquering the highest pass of the trip today. Carrying ample water, some snacks, and a packed lunch, we revel in the solitude of the remote terrain and the untouched wilderness. We have the option to choose from multiple trails - either scaling the hill northwest of Chhukung over the Nuptse Glacier moraine or retracing our steps back to Bibre and following a high path above the Niyang Khola. Shortly after setting out, we are greeted with magnificent vistas of the Island Peak valley and the rugged ridge of Amphu Lapcha. We ascend along the eastern side of the Niyang Khola valley and turn west, traversing the rocky trail. We enter a broad basin punctuated with small frozen lakes and continue our ascent over loose scree until we reach Kongma La, about five hours after leaving Chhukung. Upon reaching the top, we are greeted with a cairn festooned with prayer flags, serving as a marker of the pass. Behind us lies a landscape of icy lakes, and ahead of us is the Khumbu Glacier. The final descent is the most challenging segment of today's trek - after scaling the moraine on the opposite side, the trail turns north through the Khumbu Glacier and leads us to Lobuche.

After checking into our hotel and enjoying lunch, we set out to explore the world's highest base camp, the Everest Base Camp. While the base camp itself does not offer views of Mt. Everest, it presents a breathtaking vistas of the Khumbu Icefall and the colorful encampments of Everest expeditions during the climbing season.

early In the morning, we embark on a 2 to 3-hour ascent up to Kala Patthar (5,550 m/18,207 ft) to witness the first rays of sunlight from atop the world's highest peak, Mt. Everest. This marks a significant milestone in the trek, offering panoramic views of the awe-inspiring sunrise over Mt. Everest, Mt. Pumori, Mt. Lingtren, Khumbutse, Changtse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Nupte, Mt. Ama Dablam, and countless others. After descending from Kala Patthar, we head back to Gorakshep and retrace our steps to Lobuche. Following a delicious lunch, we branch off from the main trail and make our way towards Dzonglha. We cross a stream and continue along a fork before making our way to the wide, gravelly riverbed of a stream that flows southwestward. The trail runs across it and climbs up the ridge ahead, offering stunning views of soaring heights such as Ama Dablam and Kangtega-Thamserku, while Tawache looms prominently ahead. As we veer northward along the ridge, the vast Cho La Lake spreads below Mt. Cholatse. The lake remains in sight for an extended stretch until we descend to a wide basin. Climbing up a spur and then descending steeply to another broad basin, we finally arrive at Dzonglha after walking for about an hour and crossing a shaky bridge.

As we step out of our lodge early in the morning, we are greeted by the stunning sight of Cholatse looming over us. Today is going to be one of the most challenging days of our trip. The trek starts as we traverse through a spur extending westward from Dzongla. The path descends to a basin, and we cross a murmuring stream that is crusted with ice at places. After an hour of walking, we reach the top of the basin, preparing ourselves for the ascent to ChoLa. As we climb higher, the view back becomes increasingly captivating; the Cho La Lake begins to appear, and the Ama Dablam, in its pyramidal incarnation, presides over a range of mountains to the south, while Cholatse soars to the west.

The climb is not easy; it is steep and made worse by boulders over which we will have to scramble. We need to be alert as rocks can be glazed by ice. The final climb to ChoLa can be a little tricky as the trail curves around the bergschrund. Upon reaching the top, we see prayer flags strung across cairns, flapping in the strong wind. The scenery of majestic peaks in all directions is breathtaking.

The path leading down to Thangnak from ChoLa, although long, can be easily made out from the pass because it is just a decent. However, it can be hazardous if rocks are glazed by ice, so a bit of cautiousness is needed. We reach Thangnak, a more substantial hamlet with a small village, where we can rest our tired bodies. Stepping out of the settlement, we are greeted by fabulous mountain views. The trail brings us to the edge of the Ngozumpa glacier after a short walk, which is the longest glacier in Nepal. After crossing the glacier, we get a view of the second of the Gokyo lakes in the series of six lakes. A short distance away is the third Gokyo Lake. On the edge of this lake stands the Gokyo Village, where we can finally give rest to our tired bodies.

The Gokyo region boasts stunning vistas that are not to be missed. One of the best ways to take in the scenery is by ascending Gokyo Ri (5350 m), a small peak above the lake. This peak is sometimes referred to as Kala Pathar (not to be confused with the Kala Pathar above Gorakshep, although the view is similar). It takes about two hours to reach the summit, but the panoramic view of Cho Oyu, Gyanchung King, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse, Tawache, and many other peaks is well worth the effort. For those with more time and energy, a trip up the valley to Ngazumpa Lake (marked on maps) or even beyond to a fifth lake is an option. In addition, several small peaks in the area provide vantage points for the surrounding peaks and views of the Nangpa La, the ancient trade route into Tibet.

We must rise early today to begin our ascent to Marlung (4210m) after crossing the Renjo La Pass (5345m), as it is our only option for lodging tonight. The trail starts with a gentle climb up the side of Gokyo Ri before zigzagging precariously up a gray scree slope above the northwest corner of the lake. Once we leave the main trail and turn onto the Renjo La trail at Dudh Pokhari, it takes us about three hours to reach the pass, where a stunning panorama awaits us. We'll see Everest, Lhotse, Cholatse, Taboche, and more glistening in the sun. The view from Renjo La is similar to that from Gokyo Ri, with the third Gokyo Lake and Gokyo Village nestled below the Ngozumpa Glacier's gray smear. From the pass, we'll descend a stone staircase and scramble over loose scree to reach the south bank of Angladumba Tsho, a small lake. Beware of icy patches on the trail while descending, as it can make the descent more perilous. Along the way, we'll encounter Relama Tsho and Renjo Lake. Eventually, we'll navigate through a narrow valley clogged with massive boulders to reach Lumde, where there is a support lodge, although it may be closed at times. From Lumde, we'll walk for approximately an hour to arrive at Marlung, situated on the east bank of the Bhote Kosi.

Following the traditional route used by Tibetan traders for centuries, we begin our descent from Marulung towards Thame. We cross the Bhote Kosi and descend to Taranga, before following the valley of Langmuche Khola. This stream drains down from Dig Tsho, the glacial lake that burst its banks in 1985 and caused devastating floods along the Dudh Kosi Valley. We continue along the moraine until we reach Thame, a sprawling village with a few lodges and stunning views of mountains like Thamserku, Katenga, and Kusum Kangguru. The village is overlooked by its famous Gompa, situated on a hill to the west and established over 325 years ago. The Gompa has three big images of Chenresig, Guru Rimpoche, and Buddha Sakyamuni. In May, the colorful Mani Rimdu festival featuring mask dances is held here.

After crossing a bridge, we climb down and eventually reach Samde, which offers breathtaking views. The path steeply descends down to Thamo village, which hosts a monastery called Khari Goma that is home to some nuns and monks. Passing through a check post, we come to the world's highest hydroelectric power station, built with Austrian help, which provides electricity to most parts of upper Khumbu. We then reach the small village of Phurte, where the Kopan monastery of Bouddhanath in Kathmandu runs the Laudo monastery. This monastery is popular among westerners for Buddhist study and meditation.

Our journey eventually leads us back to Namche, passing through various Gompas, colorful prayer flags, Mani walls, and Chortens along the way.

Mr. Hari and the team provided excellent service, and the experienced guide Sabin made sure we were safe and comfortable throughout the trek.
